I am interested in how genetic changes underpinned the evolution of multicellularity; especially what role horizontal gene transfer might have played in this transition. I am investigating the role of a horizontally transferred glycosyltransferase in the evolution of multicellularity in animals and fungi. To understand the impact of this enzyme as well as the network of receptors that interact with its product on the evolution of Opisthokonts, I am combining comparative genomics with genetics in model organisms and phenotypic investigations.
